Namastday Workshops

Workshops at Namastday Yoga are different from regular classes in that they have a specific theme. The poses are sequenced for you to become aware of a particular part of the body, of yogic philosophy, of emotions and mind/body connections.  It is your chance to deepen you understanding of the poses and the actions within them. The pace is slower and more informative. You will get more individual attention.

This 5-day workshop will introduce and explore how a regular practice of Iyengar yoga can help alleviate and manage many symptoms associated with MS (fatigue, spasticity, numbness, gait issues, walking, muscle weakness, neural pain, incontinence, vision challenges, depression). Though yoga is NOT A CURE FOR MS, consistent practice can increase strength, balance, stability, stamina to enhance quality of life.

Senior Iyengar Teacher, CIYT, Garth McLean was diagnosed with relapsing remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 1996. Upon diagnosis, Garth embraced an ongoing daily practice of Iyengar Yoga based on his doctor's advice. Garth's dedication to self-healing has enabled him to successfully manage many symptoms of MS and keep his course of the condition in remission.
Garth shares his enthusiasm for the healing potential of a dedicated yoga practice with students and teachers at every level around the world. His personal in-depth knowledge of Iyengar Yoga inspires not only those with MS and other neurological conditions, but everyone.
Garth maintains that "While the practice of Iyengar Yoga is not a cure for MS, the practice is accessible to all who are willing to learn. The beauty is the practice can be adapted, with use of props as required, to suit whatever condition the student may be facing at whatever level of ability. I have found profound relief and the freedom of overall good health"

Sciatica and Lower Back Pain: Finding Relief
Led by Senior Iyengar teacher, Anna Delury
"Words alone cannot convey the value of yoga - it has to be experienced" B.K.S. Iyengar
Back pain is one of the most common modern day ailments. From mild irritation to painful debilitation, it can interfere with every aspect of life. In this workshop, Anna will focus specifically on lower back pain and sciatica, which is often felt in the buttocks and down legs as well as in the spine. Former sufferer of sciatica herself, Anna will share techniques she learned from B.K.S. Iyengar that help manage and alleviate the symptoms while also building a solid foundation for a healthy yoga practice.
Anna Delury is one of Southern California’s Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers and a founder of IYILA. She has traveled regularly to Pune to study with the Iyengar family since 1982. In 1988 she received a BSc. in Kinesiology from UCLA. Known for her insight and wry sense of humor, Anna brings a practical application of yoga philosophy into each class, as she helps guide students to a deeper understanding and awareness of what lies within each of them. Anna has just returned from 6 weeks in Pune, India. She also wrote an article for Yoga Journal about sciatica and lower back pain here.

"The Sun in the heart is propitious. It is verily the vanquisher of all impediments".

Sometimes we just forget what we should be remembering. Sometimes it is a resolution we had made. Sometimes we know perfectly well what we should do, but some "inner demon" is persuading us to not "do the right thing". Sometimes it is just something like someone's name we are struggling to recall! All these ask us to look inside. The great Sanskrit poet Valmiki, who wrote the "Ramayana" or "Tales of Rama", tells us that even the gods can feel this kind of depondency and despair. But he also tells us how to overcome it. When Lord Rama is at his darkest point, the celestial minstrel Agastya reminds him of the Light of the Sun. It can warm us and fill us so powerfully with its warmth, and with the knowledge of who we really are, and what we should be doing that -- as also happened with Rama -- we are illuminated from within. We find the wisdom and the courage we were lacking. Doubt and the misdirected mind are our worst enemies. The sun, so Agastya sings to us, is the Light of the Universe. We find it by seeking the Sun within. This Great Song called Aditya Hrdayam, "The Sun in the Heart" is the core idea for asana practice over the four classes of this weekend workshop as we explore how to help ourselves through our standing poses to ground us; inversions to gain a new perspective; forward bends to help us compose ourselves; backbends to strengthen and enliven us; and twists to help the wisdom within percolate through all of ourselves.

Kofi Busia is a long time student of Sri BKS Iyengar and has forty years of experience teaching yoga according to his guru's precepts. He studied Sanskrit and Philosophy in Oxford and Pune and has translated the Yoga Sutras from the original Sanskrit ( . An inveterate story teller, he is known for weaving science, philosophy, ancient texts, oral tradition and stories of all kinds into his classes. He currently lives and teaches in Santa Cruz Ca.
